Thursday Night Triples - TNT
What's TNT?
TNT is a weekly random draw triples event, run by the GMDGC, held at the Center Chains Disc Golf Course in Waterbury Center, VT.
Format
The format of play is referred to as "favorite disc". Each player on the 3 person team tees off from the tee box. Subsequent throws are made from one of the three previous team throws. Each player can choose to shoot from a different disc or the whole team and shoot from a single disc - it is up to the individual player - hence "favorite disc". The team score is based on how many rounds of throws need to be made - not how many actual throws. For example a team takes their three tee shots. All players elect to shoot from the furthest tee shot. The first two players take their approach shots, one of which leaves their disc very close to the basket. The third player, knowing they are in good position to make the putt in the next round, makes an aggressive shot, going for the basket and makes an amazing 80 foot putt. 6 throws were made, but the team score for that hole is a 2. 18 holes are played with the lowest scoring team winning.
What do I win?
Well that depends. The winning team takes home the cash prize, but the size of the prize depends on the number of players. The entry fee for TNT is $3 for GMDGC members and $5 for non-members. $3 of each player's entry fee goes to the pot. The extra $2 for the non-members goes to support the GMDGC in its efforts to improve the course and ultimately provide new disc golf opportunities around the state.
I'm a Beginner. I'm never going to win. Why would I Play?
Herein lies the beauty of TNT. Though the teams are drawn at random, there are some rules to this randomness. Firstly, each player is self-ranked on a 1 - 5 scale with 1 being for brand new players and 5 being for seasoned Pros. See details below of how to rank yourself. Each name is put in the mix and as individuals are pulled out and teams are formed, no team can have a total score of more than 10 or less than 6. This guarantees that the skill levels of the teams are well distributed. Basically its anyone's prize to win.
For ranking guidelines see the chart below:
- 1. Rankings of 1 are for brand new players or players who typically would shoot 70+ on a round by themselves from the blue tees.
- 2. Players ranked 2 would expect to shoot between a 65 - 70 for a single round of 18 from the blue tees.
- 3. Players ranked 3 would expect to shoot between a 58 - 65 for a single round of 18 from the blue tees.
- 4. Players ranked 4 would expect to shoot between a 52 - 58 for a single round of 18 from the blue tees.
- 5. Players ranked 5 would expect to shoot 52 or less from the blue tees. These folks are not satisfied with par.
This Sounds Awesome! When is it?
You are right! TNT is awesome! TNT will be happening every Thursday night starting May 1, 2008 and running through the end of the daylight savings time in the fall. The teams will be determined based on who is present at 5:45pm - so SHOW UP AT 5:30! Due to daylight concerns this time is firm. If you are late, you will be out of luck! As the days get longer this time may move later to allow more folks to play during the peak of the daylight hours and we will update the schedule on the home page accordingly.
Extras
There will be a running Ace Pot which will be open every week for TNT. So bring that extra dollar for the ace pot.
